Create and edit templates

Save Standard or Form templates for the workspace or a Team, then edit, archive, or restore them.

Open the right settings

For a template used across Teams, open Workspace Settings โ†’ Issue templates. You need workspace owner or admin access to manage it. For a Team template, open Team Settings โ†’ Templates with that Team's settings management access.

Select New template, then choose Standard or Form. The editor opens as a settings page. Both kinds are available; Forms explains the Questions editor and Preview.

Write a starting point

Give the template a name of up to 80 characters. Active template names must be unique within the same scope, ignoring letter case. The optional template description can be up to 280 characters and explains when to use the template. It is separate from the Issue description.

In the Issue card, enter an optional starting title and write the Issue description. Use headings, checklists, or placeholders to guide the creator. You can also change the template icon color.

Use Add sub-issue to define up to 25 direct sub-issues. Give each a title; descriptions and properties are optional. The creator can edit or remove these drafts before creating the parent Issue.

Set default properties

Use the property controls in the Issue card and in each sub-issue. These defaults are starting values that the creator can change. A Form labels this section Defaults and notes People outside the Team don't get defaults.

ScopeAvailable defaults
WorkspacePriority, workspace labels, assignee, and Project
TeamThe workspace properties, plus Team status, Team labels, and estimate when estimates are enabled for that Team

Due date is not a template default. A Form can ask for a due date as a question. When it has a Priority question, Priority ยท set by question replaces the Priority control and saving removes the stored Priority default. Unavailable properties are skipped when applying a template, with a notice. Non-member Triage submissions also skip defaults and sub-issues.

Select Create to save a new template or Save to update an existing one. The editor returns to the list after saving. Cancel or the back link returns without saving the draft.

Edit future Issues

In the template's own settings list, select its Edit action, update the content, and select Save. Changes apply to Issues created afterwards. Existing Issues and their original template records stay as they were.

Inherited Team templates are read-only in a sub-team. Open the named parent Team's settings to edit one, if you have permission there.

Archive and restore

Use a template's Archive action to remove it from creation pickers. Archiving clears every Team default that uses that template. When archiving a default from its Team list, confirm Archive template in the warning dialog.

To restore a workspace or Team template, expand the N archived templates row at the bottom of the list and use the template's Restore action. If another active template now uses the same name, rename that active template before restoring.

Restoring makes the template available again but does not restore its former defaults. Set those defaults again if needed. There is no template delete action. Existing Issues remain available and can still be filtered by their archived template.
